Training on Asbestos Waste Management was held in Alaverdi Community

  • Published 15/05/2025

On 7 May, a specialized Training on Asbestos Waste Management in Retrofitting Projects was held in Alaverdi Community, Lori Region. The session was organized under the UNDP-GCF “De-risking and Scaling-up Investment in Energy Efficient Building Retrofits” Project, in collaboration with the Alaverdi community, where energy efficiency retrofitting has been jointly implemented in 63 residential and 5 public buildings. Asbestos-containing materials were identified in some of these buildings.

The training brought together representatives from local urban planning and construction, agriculture and environment, healthcare departments, construction companies, and technical supervision teams.

The training aimed to ensure safe and compliant handling, removal, and disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) during retrofitting activities - a key requirement under the project’s environmental safeguards.

Participants gained practical knowledge on:

• Identifying ACMs in the buildings to be retrofitted
• Safe removal and disposal procedures
• Health risks associated with asbestos exposure
• Applying supervision checklists and coordinating with relevant authorities.

The training speakers are PhD, Expert Nora Ayvazyan, UNDP-GCF Building Engineering Analyst Andre Ohanian, and UNDP-GCF Project Civil Engineer Sergey Tumanyan.
