SDG 7 Roadmap has been officially launched

  • Published 16/05/2025

On 14 May 2025, Armenia took a transformative step toward a more sustainable tomorrow with the official launch of the SDG 7 Roadmap in Yerevan. This milestone event reaffirmed the country’s commitment to ensuring affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

More than just energy, SDG 7 is a multidimensional goal — powering progress in health, education, livelihoods, and climate resilience. As Ms. Françoise Jacob, UN Armenia Resident Coordinator, emphasized in her welcoming remark:

"Achieving SDG 7 is about people and partnerships — and the roadmap is a strong example of what UN unity can deliver. She also underlined the importance of energy diversification and efficiency for security, climate action, and economic growth, linking it to biodiversity and COP-17, as well as the need for stronger financing solutions for vulnerable groups, behavioral shifts, cross-ministerial coordination and private sector engagement.”

The event opened with remarks from Mr. Hovhannes Abrahamyan, Acting Head of the Energy Department at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, alongside representatives from UNECE, United Nations ESCAP and UNDP in Armenia — united in their call for bold, collective action.

Key takeaways from the SDG 7 Roadmap for Armenia:

• Without stronger action, Armenia may fall short of its 2030 SDG 7 targets
• The roadmap charts a path to Net Zero by 2050, through:

- Electrifying transport – 50,000 EVs & 3,000 charging stations.
- Widespread use of electric cookstoves and high-efficiency heating systems.
- Scaling up green finance through subsidies and green bonds.
- Accelerating transition to heat pumps and renewables.

The building sector alone holds energy-saving potential of over 185 ktoe/year, signaling the urgent need for large-scale energy-efficient retrofits.

Co-organized by the UNDP, UNECE and UNESCAP, this event marked a defining moment in shaping Armenia’s sustainable energy transition.
